There is a lot you need to know about emergency kits. Here's a checklist to help your family prepare. All of these items will come in handy for you and your family if you have an emergency.

  • A first aid kit is mandatory including medications and prescriptions, and proof of insurance must also be included. Personal identity for each family member such as driver's license, school ID, etc. Cards or passports and a little money in hand are also important.

  • Put 1-3 gallons of water per person on the emergency list and 3-5 days of delivery of nonperishable food – make sure you bring a can opener with you.

  • A flashlight and extra chain battery with some basic tools like a hammer, screwdriver, and knife is a must. Make sure to get spare keys for your home and car.

  • Comfortable items for children such as blankets or small toys. A change of clothing for each family member, including a raincoat and comfortable shoes, should be included. Hygiene items such as soap, shampoo, toothbrush, and toothpaste for your personal use. Garbage bags and sunscreen, bug spray, and umbrellas are also required.
